Why Your Competitor's Website Is Outranking You on Google (And How to Fix It)

July 1, 2026·3 min read

You're offering a better product, better service, maybe even better prices — but when someone Googles what you sell, your competitor shows up first. Here's what's actually going on, and what you can do about it this month.

Their Website Loads Faster Than Yours

Google tracks how quickly your pages load — especially on mobile. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to appear, most visitors bounce, and Google notices.

Picture this: a customer searches "dentist near me" on their phone during a lunch break. Your competitor's site opens instantly. Yours is still loading. Guess who books the appointment?

A slow website doesn't just annoy visitors — it actively pushes you down the search results.

Quick wins:

  • Compress your images (huge photo files are the #1 culprit)
  • Ditch heavy website builders bloated with plugins you don't use
  • Test your site on PageSpeed Insights — aim for a score above 80

They're Answering Questions You're Ignoring

Google's job is to answer questions. If your competitor's website has a blog post titled "How much does LASIK cost in Dubai?" and yours just says "Book a consultation," Google will send traffic to them — not you.

I worked with a boutique fitness studio whose competitor was outranking them for every local search. The difference? The competitor had 15 short articles answering questions like "Is Pilates good for back pain?" and "What to wear to your first reformer class." Simple content. Massive traffic.

Every question your customers ask you in person is a page you should have on your website.

Start with 5 questions you hear every week. Write clear, honest answers. Publish them.

Their Site Actually Works on Mobile

Over 70% of local searches happen on phones. If your site looks broken, tiny, or clunky on mobile, Google demotes you — even if it looks beautiful on a laptop.

Red flags:

  • Text you have to pinch and zoom to read
  • Buttons too small to tap with a thumb
  • Pop-ups that cover the whole screen
  • A menu that doesn't open properly

Pull out your phone right now and try to book, buy, or contact yourself through your own website. If it feels awkward, your customers feel it too — and so does Google.

They've Earned Trust Signals You Haven't

Google looks for proof that your business is real, active, and respected. Your competitor probably has:

  • A fully filled-out Google Business Profile with photos, hours, and regular posts
  • Dozens of recent reviews (not just five from three years ago)
  • Mentions and links from local directories, news sites, or partners
  • Consistent business info across every platform (name, address, phone number)

The fix is unglamorous but powerful: ask every happy customer for a Google review. Claim every free directory listing you can. Reach out to local blogs or partners for a mention.

Trust compounds. Six months of small trust-building efforts will move you past competitors who've stopped trying.
